Mount Elbrus (Russian: Эльбрус) is an inactive volcano settled in the western chain elevation range, in Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia, Russia, near the border of Georgia. A stratovolcano that has lain dormant for most 2,000 years, it is the maximal elevation in the Caucasus. Mt. Elbrus (west summit) stands at 5,642 metres (18,510 ft) and it is not exclusive the maximal elevation in Europe (depending on continental border used); it is also the maximal point of Russia. The east meeting is slightly lower: 5,621 metres (18,442 ft).
